The season got under way for Riga's 11 fountains. i.e. – they were turned on April 30^th, reports LETA.

Both floating fountains in Riga Canal, one at the National Opera and the other at Bastejkalns Park, were switched on, Vjaceslavs Stepanenko (Honor to Serve Riga), head of the Riga City Council's Housing and Environment Committee, told LETA.

May 1, the city's oldest fountain, "Nymph" in the park at the National Opera, was put in operation, as well as the cascade at Bastejkalns and the large fountain at the Congress Center.

There will be special chemicals used in the fountain at the Congress Center and the "Nymph" to keep algae off, therefore parents are advised to watch their children as it is unknown how the humans react to these substances, stressed Stepanenko.

The cost of electricity makes up the largest part of the cost of running a fountain. The total electricity cost for all the fountains in Riga could reach EUR 15,000 this year, said Stepanenko.

In total, there are eleven fountains in Riga that are all to become operational by May 9.
