Over 100,000 persons participated in Nationwide Clean-up Day on April 25th 2015, LETA was informed by one of the event's coordinators Madara Laicane.

She said that activity this year was greater than last year, but that a more precise calculation on the number of participants and the tons or garbage collected will be announced on Monday.

''We are very happy that so many people came out. We would like to thank each participant for helping to make Latvia a greener place,'' one of the event's coordinators Vita Jaunzeme said.

Each year, the event attracts more people, gathering 150,000-160,000 volunteers in 2010, 190,000 volunteers in 2011, over 190,000 in 2012, but slightly less in 2013 and 2014 due to bad weather.

A total of 1,700 locations throughout Latvia were registered during this year's Big Cleanup Day.

The aim of Big Cleanup Day is to make Latvia the cleanest and most pleasant place in the world by 2018, when the country will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its independence.
