Several hundred marked one-year anniversary since Zolitude tragedy

Several hundred have gathered at the site of the Zolitude supermarket tragedy on Priedaine Street 20 in Riga this evening to mark the one-year anniversary since the collapse of the Maxima supermarket, LETA has observed.

 

Many person were holding flowers and candles, which they are quietly leaving at the site of the tragedy. The atmosphere was very emotional, LETA has observed.

 

At the start of the memorial event, those in attendance joined together for prayer. After the prayer, people began laying candles in the form of a cross.

 

Also participating in the memorial event are many firefighters and police officers.

 

The memorial place, located near a fence that separates the supermarket's parking lot from the collapsed building, is decorated with the national flag, flowers placed in several rows, candles, photographs of those who died in the tragedy, and plush toys. The scene of the tragedy is covered in snow, cordoned off by a fence.

 

Commemorative events were also taking place in several churches in Latvia. Orthodox churches in Latvia were also holding church services and memorials dedicated to those who died in the tragedy.

 

LETA also reported, 54 people died and scores were injured when the Maxima supermarket in Riga's Zolitude neighborhood caved in on November 21, 2013.
