Latvian biathlete Piksons fails doping test

BC, Riga, 06.11.2014.Print version

Latvian biathlete Edgars Piksons has been suspended for failing a doping test, the International Biathlon Union (IBU) said Wednesday, informs DPA/LETA.

The 31-year-old tested positive for the banned substance ''19-Norandrosterone'' after a practice competition in Priekuli on September 22. Piksons has waived the right to have a B-sample tested, the IBU said.

The IBU anti-doping panel is reviewing the case and could ban Piksons for up to two years.

Meanwhile, the Latvian Biathlon Federation informed LETA today that Piksons himself denies knowingly taking any banned substances, but has announced his retirement professional sports.

Piksons' bet performance was in 2011, when he finished in 8th in the sprint at the World Biathlon Championships.

He did not compete at the Sochi Olympics, where Latvia was only represented in the biathlon by Andrejs Rastorgujevs.

Piksons did however compete at the 2006 and 2010 Olympics for Latvia, with his best result a 37th place finish in the sprint in Vancouver.
