BC, Tallinn, 28.10.2014.Print version

A 15-year-old schoolboy shot and killed a teacher during class in the Paalalinna School in Viljandi, South Estonia, Monday afternoon, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

South Estonian District Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Kristina Kostina told Public Broadcasting's news portal that the police got a call at 1.55 p.m.. A shooting had taken place during class in the Paalalinna School, during which the German language teacher, 56-year-old Ene Sarap received lethal injuries. No one else was injured, said police spokeswoman Tuuli Härson. There were four more pupils in the classroom when the shooting took place.

The shooter, 15-year old boy from the school's 9th grade, was detained by the school staff who took the weapon away from him. He did not resist and was handed over to the police. The police checked the whole school building and found nothing suspicious.

Estonian interior minister Hanno Pevkur said that the boy used a revolver that legally belonged to his father.

The Estonian criminal code enables to punish a minor with a maximum 10 year prison sentence for murder. A minor is capable of guilt when he is mentally sound and at least 14 years old.

Postimees Online writes that while people close to the shooter described him as a successful pupil and open person, his Facebook account may give an insight to his fatal act. Over the years, the boy posted few texts but a lot of the photos and picture messages are about weapons, war and violence. On April 1, he posted a picture with a writing "Don't judge me cause I'm quiet. No one plans a murder out loud". He has also posted messages like "You inspire my serial killer" and "Nobody cares". Photos reveal that the boy was involved in medieval fighting.

The 56-year old teacher Ene Sarap was an experienced and valued teacher, for example the Estonian German Language Teachers society granted her the title of teacher of the year in 2010 and she was elected Viljandi County Teacher of the Year in 2007.
