On Thursday, the event Ukraine Culture Days began at Vilnius University, this year dedicated to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine's most praised poet, reports LETA/ELTA.

Lithuanian Minister of Culture Sarunas Birutis emphasized that by supporting the new Ukrainian government Lithuania defends its own culture and values.

According to the minister, Ukraine Culture Days stand as a symbol of solidarity and friendship between the two states and nations.

"The support to the Ukrainian state is not only a fight for Ukraine's freedom. It is also a fight for our own freedom, the freedom of Lithuania. We can be proud that today many human values are shared. By supporting the nation of Ukraine and the new Ukrainian government we at the same time safeguard our own culture and shared values," the minister said.

Ukrainian Minister of Culture Yevhen Nyshchuk who is visiting Lithuania on the occasion of the event regretted that the current situation and events in Ukraine have stopped cultural programmes and thanked Lithuania for its support in many areas.
