BC, Tallinn, 15.10.2014.Print version

The foreigner, detainee of Guantanamo prison, whom Estonia agreed to receive, was arrested years ago by the United States forces in Afghanistan, but no further information about him can be shared, said Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The Estonian government recently announced that it will accept, at the request of the USA, a person who has been detained in the Guantanamo prison in Cuba for many years.

Urmas Paet explained in the public television "Ringvaade" show, that the person is not a criminal, but a person who has not been indicted by the U.S. authorities at all, and who cannot return to homeland because of possible repressions.

Paet said, answering the question whether the former prisoner could do harm here when let into freedom, Paet said that Estonia's corresponding institutions will guarantee that nothing bad would happen.

"It was Afghanistan," said Paet, when the presenter asked about the detention and other circumstances. However, the foreign minister did not agree to disclose the citizenship of the detainee.

Paet explained that the situation in Afghanistan was 11-12 years ago much more tense, and people, just like the person to be brought to Estonia, were detained during special operations and the Americans had time to look into their background only when in Guantanamo.
