''Panathinaikos'' will not sign Valters, but could sign Blums instead

Greek basketball club Athens ''Panathinaikos'' has reconsidered in signing veteran Latvian point-guard Kristaps Valters, and instead could sign another veteran Latvian point-guard – Janis Blums, according to Greek media.

It was reported yesterday that Valters has been signed by the Greek club as a replacement for one of its injured point-guards, and could remain with the club until the end of the season. However, the club decided last minute not to go ahead with the deal, and sign a different point-guard instead, reports LETA.

According to Greek media, this point-guard is Latvian national team point-guard Janis Blums.

In his career, Blums has played for such clubs as Bilbao ''Basket'', Naples ''Eldo'', Vilnius ''Lietuvos rytas'', Kazakh club ''Astana'', Polish club ''Anwil'', and Latvian club ''Ventspils''.

''Panathinaikos'' is one of the top clubs in Europe, and last won the ULEB Euroleague in 2011. The club is competing in the Euroleague this season as well.

As reported, the 33-year-old K.Valters was also a member of Latvia's notorious Eurobasket 2009 squad where many players embarrassed themselves and the national team with several off-court incidents and disciplinary problems. After the tournament, he was given a three-year ban from the Latvian team.

Meanwhile, the 32-year-old Blums is one of the more respected players in Latvia, rarely turning down the opportunity for representing his country on the international level.
