Canadian fighter jets arrive to Lithuania

Four F-18 Hornet fighter jets of the Royal Canadian Air Force landed at the Aviation Base in Siauliai on Tuesday, reports LETA/ELTA.

 

It will be the first time that Canadians patrol the skies over the Baltics. These Canadian forces have been deployed to augment the contingency of the Portuguese Air Force which will be taking over NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission from 1 September.

 

Portuguese Air Force F-16 jets are expected to fly over to Lithuania on 29 August, while the official changeover ceremony is going to take place on 1 September.

 

From 1 September the Baltic airspace will be patrolled for four months by Portuguese, Canadian, German and Dutch air forces.

 

Portugal and Canada will station its aircraft in Siauliai, while Germany in Estonia's Amari Air Base and the Netherlands in Malbork Air Base in Poland.

 

Currently 4 Polish jets augmented by 4 British jets are ensuring the security of the Baltic airspace from Lithuania.
