Estonia celebrates restoring independence

Estonia celebrates the 23rd anniversary of the state regaining independence on Wednesday, August 20 with a number of events in Tallinn and elsewhere, informs LETA.

 

Most Estonian towns hold commemorative events as well as concerts and different public events to mark the day which has been a public holday since.

 

Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves will hold a reception in his rose garden Wednesday evening.

 

Dramatic developments in the Soviet Union in August 1991 resulted in the three Baltic states regaining their independence. On August 20, 1991, the Supreme Council of Estonia, along with the leadership of the Estonian Committee agreed an "On the independence of the Estonian state and the establishment of the Constitutional Assembly", thus proclaiming the restoration of Estonian independence.
