The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) decided at the council meeting this weekend to grant the rights to organise the 2017 Orienteering World Championships to the Estonian Orienteering Union which plans to organise the competition in South Estonia, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Title competitions for juniors and students have already been organised in Estonia, as well as the European Championships in 2006 but an orienteering event of such scope is the first in the Baltic States.

The organising application prescribes a competition centre in Otepää and five different medal fields in four different places in Southern Estonia.

Estonian Orienteering Union board chairman Sixten Sild said that EOU has proven over the years itself as high-level organiser and thus it is time to organise the most important event the sports. Also a generation of young athletes has emerged in Estonia who should certainly bring at least one medal home.

Teams of 40-50 states from all continents participate at the world championships.
