BC, Tallinn, 16.07.2008.Print version

The State Audit Office will start investigating the delay in the completion of the Victory Monument and the lack of co-operation between the State and the local municpality, writes the National Broadcasting.

The audit to be carried out by the State Audit Office will deal with different aspects in establishing the Victory Monument of the War of Independence – the co-operation between State and local municipality structures, project management, planning, compliance with laws, use of funds etc.

State Auditor Mihkel Oviir noted that the problems linked with completion with the Victory Monument which is important for the entire State as well as the delay of the planned completion and the contradictory information regarding the reasons for the problems indicate that the Riigikogu, the Government and the public need to know the results of an independent thorough analysis.

“Last week in his statement, the minister of defence indicated problems between the State and the local municipality, which are particularly regrettable in case of such an object like the Victory Monument of the War of Independence as such administrative confusion have in the end a bad effect on the reliability of the State and of the local municipality in the eyes of individuals,” he explained.

“State Audit Office also intends to thoroughly investigate the problems concerning the granting of the construction permit for the monument, involving, if necessary, specialists and experts to that end,” added Oviir.
