The citizen of Somalia detained in the Tallinn Airport in possession of drugs

BC, Tallinn, 14.07.2008.Print version

The citizen of Somalia detained in the Tallinn Airport who was in possession of a large amount of drugs might have been testing Estonia as a possible transit country for drugs, writes the National Broadcasting.

The employees of the Tax and Customs Board detained at the Tallinn Airport a Somalian national named Ahmed whose only luggage was eight and a half kilograms of exotic drug khat. In Europe those who use khat are nearly exclusively immigrants, hence the prosecutor’s office suspects that with the package Estonia’s suitability for transiting khat was tested.

The man carrying 117 sprigs of khat that were carefully wrapped in banana leaves and nothing else in his suitcase claimed that he planned to relax here with khat. This was the first case where khat was detected by authorities in Estonia.

Assistant prosecutor of the prosecuting department of the Public Prosecutor’s Office Sirle Melk noted that Estonian law enforcement authorities have received information from their colleagues in Finland as if different individuals are testing different airports through which it would be easier to smuggle the plants. “Probably it was now time for the Tallinn Airport,” said Melk.
