Latvian Skudra becomes new head coach of Russian ice hockey club Nizhny Novgorod "Torpedo"

BC, Riga, 15.04.2013.Print version

Latvian specialist and former NHL goaltender Peteris Skudra has been officially confirmed as the new head coach of Russian ice hockey club Nizhny Novgorod "Torpedo", which plays in the Kontinental Ice Hockey League (KHL), informs LETA.

The 39-year-old Skudra has already conducted the first practice with his new team.

"Torpedo" finished in 11th place in the KHL's Western Conference standings this season, and did not qualify for the playoffs.

In his NHL career, Skudra played for the Boston "Bruins", Buffalo "Sabres", Pittsburgh "Penguins" and Vancouver "Canucks".

Skudra does not have the best reputation amongst Latvian ice hockey, as he always turned down invitations to play for the national team. The last time he played for Latvia was at the 1997 Ice Hockey World Championships, after which he never played another game for his country. In later years, he hinted that he could return to the national team, but when it was time to join training camp, either he once again declined of his phone was switched off.
