State to take over ports of Riga and Ventspils

After the US Treasury's decision to imopse sanctions on Ventspils mayor Aivars Lembergs (For Latvia and Ventspils) and four legal entities, including Ventspils Freeport Authority, the Latvian state is taking over the ports of Riga and Ventspils, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) told journalists Tuesday.

LDz Cargo, the rail freight shipping subsidiary of Latvijas Dzelzcels (Latvian Railways) national rail company, turned over EUR 188.288 mln in the first nine months of 2019, which is a decrease of 6.5 percent against the respective period a year before, while the company’s profit was 4.7 times higher and came to EUR 818,263, according to information released by the company reported LETA.
