Latvia's annual inflation hits 3.4% in April

The latest data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in April 2019, compared to April 2018, the average level of consumer prices* rose by 3.4%. Prices of goods increased by 3.5% and prices of services by 3.3%.

New Novatek gas shipment approaching Lithuania's Klaipeda

Russia's largest independent gas company Novatek's new LNG shipment from the Russian port of Vysotsk is approaching Lithuania's port of Klaipeda. The shipment is believed to be meant for the largest gas consumer in Lithuania, the Jonava-based fertilizer producer Achema, informed LETA/BNS.

Along with rather unfavourable developments in the external economic environment, including high uncertainty surrounding the prospects for global trade negotiations, protectionist pressures in some industries, a delayed Brexit as well as lower estimates for global growth, the flash estimate published by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia suggests that Latvia's economy has slowed down quite substantially in the first quarter of 2019 (-0.3% quarter-on-quarter and +3.0% year-on-year according to seasonally adjusted data).

Lithuanian Railways gears up for Rail Baltica development

Lithuania's state-run railway company Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LG) is getting ready for further construction of the European standard-gauge railway Rail Baltica. Preparatory works involve the modernization of the section from the Lithuanian-Polish border to Kaunas (Jiesia), the development of the Kaunas railway node and the construction of depots for infrastructure maintenance, informed LETA/BNS.
