Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony Center) remains in serious condition, and might possibly be transported to Germany for further medical treatment, LETA was informed by the mayor's press secretary Anna Kononova.

Nils Usakovs.

''At the moment, we are evaluating the possibility of transporting Usakovs to a hospital in Berlin,'' Kononova said.

As reported, Usakovs is currently still in the Stradins Hospital's Intensive Care Unit and is in serious but stable condition.

Usakovs was hospitalized Sunday morning after collapsing and losing consciousness during the "Nordea" Riga Marathon.

Usakovs is being kept in a medication-induced deep sleep, so that his organism can free itself easier of accumulated substances due to lack of oxygen, he added. It is hard to predict right now when the mayor will recover.

Reports of lung oedema or a brain hemorrhage were denied by doctors yesterday as untrue.

LETA also reported, Usakovs (b.1976) participated in the half-marathon 21km event on Sunday, but took ill not far from the finish line.
