The aim of the EDEN initiative is to draw attention to the value, diversity and shared characteristics of European tourist destinations, and to promote destinations where the economic growth objective is pursued in such a way as to ensure the social, cultural and environmental sustainability of tourism, as LTDA spokeswoman Marita Neimane informed LETA.
Tervete Nature Park was awarded the European Destination of Excellence title thanks to its economic, ecological and social sustainability principles.
The official EDEN award ceremony will take place in Brussels this fall.
Last year, Rezekne District was named the European Destination of Excellence in Latvia, whereas in 2007 the title went to Kuldiga.
