Spending by foreign visitors at Lithuanian retail stores fell by 11% in 2016 compared with 2015 and the value of the average shopping basket was down by 5%, the business daily Verslo Zinios reported on Tuesday, citing data from the tax refund company Global Blue Lietuva, writes LETA/BNS.

Tourists from Russia and Belarus account for the largest share of VAT refunds for third-country visitors, but their spending at Lithuanian stores declines year after year, the paper noted.

"We have noticed that several members of a family sometimes spend small amounts of money at the same store and we link this to a restriction imposed by Belarus for tourists traveling abroad more than once a month. They have to pay import taxes on goods worth more than 300 euros," said Lineta Navickaite, project manager at Global Blue Lietuva.

Tourists from Belarus and Russia last year spent 152 euros on average, down by 5% year-on-year, with 89% of the money spent in Vilnius, 3% in Kaunas and 7% in Klaipeda.
