Despite the tense political/economic situation, the Jurmala City Council nevertheless projects an increase in tourist numbers this year, Jurmala Mayor Gatis Truksnis (Greens/Farmers) told Latvian Television today, reports LETA.

Truksnis attempted to refute concerns aired by some that Jurmala will be empty this summer, and said that when the warm weather finally arrives, many people will visit the coastal resort city.

''From May, and all throughout the summer, many international events will be held in Jurmala. The Dzintari Concert Hall will also host a wide range of concerts, including top singers from Russia. I would like to say that there will be no shortage of events taking place in Jurmala this summer,'' Truksnis said.

Meanwhile, answering a question whether the local government expects an increase in the number of tourists visiting Jurmala this summer, Truksnis said that the Jurmala City Council is expecting a 12% increase in tourist numbers this summer.

As reported, the number of tourists visiting Jurmala in 2014 increased by 17.4% when compared to the previous year. The number of tourists from Russia made up 34% of the total number of tourists visiting the coastal resort city last year.
