Allegedly, the new building that will cost up to 240 million euros is necessary on the basis of a decision made in 2001, in order to hold all future summits in Brussels and to create good working conditions for the staff of the President of the EU.
“Representatives of the small country Estonia feel that the current rooms are big enough for the European Union to work efficiently, but the decision on getting the new building was made in expectations of good times, before Estonia acceded to the EU,” commented the EU information director of the Government’s Press Office Villu Känd. “Estonia has not made any proposals to cut construction costs or to halt the project,” he added.
According to his opinion, halting the project in the current stage of construction would probably be a greater waste of taxpayers’ money than completing the works.
