BC, Tallinn, 05.08.2016.Print version
The Estonian government on Thursday gave its support in principle to a bill introduced by the parliamentary Constitutional Committee whose aim is to establish a border zone, informs LETA/BNS.

The border zone will be established for the guarding and protection of Estonia's external land border and for ensuring the border regime, spokespeople for the government said. It will consist of a five kilometers wide zone on the inland side of the state border parallel to the border strip.

The Interior Ministry additionally proposed to establish a one-kilometer-wide border zone on the shores of transboundary water bodies.

The police will be given the right to move unhindered by foot and by vehicle as well as restrict the presence and movement of people within the border zone. Activities disturbing the guarding of the border and the border peace within the border zone and on transboundary water bodies must be approved by the Police and Border Guard Board.

The bill also provides for restrictions on the flying of unmanned aerial vehicles near the external border.
