Flats in Lithuanian Visaginas attract Russian-speaking neighbors

BC, Vilnius, 10.12.2015.Print version
Real estate in Visaginas, where property prices have fallen in recent years, attracts Russian-speaking neighbors from Eastern Europe as owning a property in Lithuania makes it easier for them to obtain Schengen visas, the daily Lietuvos Zinios reported on Thursday, cites LETA/BNS.

An estimated 300 persons from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine have this year purchased properties, mostly flats, in Visaginas.

However, only around 20 of them want to live in this northern Lithuanian town and stay there for a long time.

The number of immigrants has increased since the war in eastern Ukraine broke out last year.

According to Visaginas Mayor Dalia Straupaite, some immigrants choose to live in Visaginas because they have relatives or close friends there and other third-country citizens, especially highly skilled professionals, come to the town because they receive job offers.
