Plans to sell and commercialize Riga-Lucavsala called off
BC, Riga, 15.06.2015.Print version
The Mayor of Riga announced today that the plans to auction off the city-owned 103 hectares on Lucavsala Island have been called off, commenting that the idea "was not one of the best." As a result, the July 8 city council decision will be overturned, reported LETA.
Those living on or owning a family garden on the island had been raising
their voices all year long, even though they are small in number.
Mayor Uskaovs
met with the garden community lessees on June 10, and, as one of them recounted
with astonishment, the mayor had apologized for the decision to sell Lucavsala
without taking into account their interests, and declared that the property
would not be sold. In other words, residents will be able to tend their gardens
from now on, and the island will be developed in the future as a green zone.
A council will be set up to discuss and decide on the island's future course.
