Latvian pavilion at Expo 2015 could be replaced by park worth EUR 1.08 mln

Netherlands-based Gestalt Communications has offered Latvia to cancel the construction of a pavilion and to replace it by a park, which would symbolize Latvia as a country rich in forests, newspaper Diena reports, cites LETA.

The company is offering to implement this idea for EUR 1.08 million. The said park would consist of 50 trees, 100 various bushes, and other plantations. According to Diena, the park would have a wooden footbridge with screens on both sides, displaying an interactive exhibition.

The board of Gestalt Communications had also worked on other countries' pavilions at "Expo" in the previous years.

This is one of the latest offers Latvia has received, Diena reports.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) told Economy Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola that she, as the prime minister of the presiding country of the Council of the European Union, would find it unpleasant to hear objections from Italy for withdrawing from the event.

As reported, the government decided last month to reject Economy Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola's proposal to cancel Latvia's participation in the event, and allocated additional EUR 1.6 million to cover the cost of Latvia's participation.

Reizniece-Ozola still objects to the idea, saying that Latvia's participation in "World Expo 2015" will cost far too much – EUR 7.3 million in total. Furthermore, the minister said that the preparation period has been too short and tense in order to successfully implement the project.

Tomorrow, January 27, the government plans to make the final decision on Latvia's participation in the international exhibition "World Expo 2015" in Milan.
