The sales of the largest Lithuanian strong alcohol beverages producer Stumbras based in Kaunas dropped 4.96 times in January 2009 compared to the same month last year and totalled 1.79 million litas (0.52 million euros). Its turnover in the same month of 2008 stood at 8.88 million litas (2.57 million euros).

The company explains that its sales have dropped because the excise for alcohol beverages was raised once again this year, writes ELTA.

Moreover, it forecasts that its sales will continue shrinking. The company suspended its operation in the end of 2008 and this year in the light of the reduced turnover. The number of employees has also been reduced.

In January this year, there were 288 employees in the company. This figure stood at 352 people a year ago.
