Estonian State Forest Management Centre (Riigimetsa Majandamise Keskus – RMK) will plant nearly 18 million trees in state forests this year, which will provide seasonal work for 1,700 people, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

RMK forest management centre chief specialist Rainer Laigu said that 95% of the forest renewal takes place in spring but for the third year now, RMK plants forests in autumn too.

"We renew forests in a total of 7,135 hectares – mainly we plant, in some places sow," Laigu said, adding that 2,000 hectares of forests where trees have been felled will be left for natural renewal, i.e. there nature can renew the forests itself.

In order to renew old forests and guarantee sustainability of forests, RMK conducts renewal tree felling on nearly 8,700 hectares this year which is 1% of RMK's forest land area and comparable to earlier years.

In the middle of April, 2 months of felling "peace" starts in state forests to protect the nesting period of birds and animals.
