Manufacturing volumes in Liepaja fell by 50% in 2013

With halt in production at the metallurgical company Liepajas metalurgs, manufacturing volumes in the city of Liepaja (southwestern Latvia) have reduced by approximately 50%, however, manufacturing volumes in the city still remain higher than any other city in Latvia outside Riga, LETA was informed by Liepaja City Council public relations representative Andrejs Rjabcevs.

The Liepaja City Council has summarized data from the Central Statistical Bureau, which shows that in 2013 products worth EUR 285 million were manufactured in the city, which is approximately 50% less when compared to 2012, when manufacturing volumes reached a value of EUR 607.9 million.

This reduction was mostly due to Liepajas metalurgs’s shutting down, the largest manufacturing company in the city.

Despite the substantial reduction, Liepaja still remains second in manufacturing volumes amongst Latvian cities behind Riga. Liepaja still manufactures two-time more than such cities as Ventspils, Jelgava or Daugavpils.
