Lithuania's pig farmers to be encouraged to turn to other kinds of domestic animals

BC, Vilnius, 20.08.2013.Print version
According to Director of the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) Jonas Milius, the pig farmers who were growing the pigs near the border were to be offered to turn to the breeding of the other kinds of the domestic animals. The compensation was to be offered for the switch from pigs' to other domestic animals' breeding, reported LETA/ELTA.

According to Milius, the compensation could be treated as a way to prevent Lithuania from the African swine fever virus.

After the meeting with Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius on Monday, the director of the VMVT said that the final decision was to be made on September 9-10. According to Milius, it was planned to give LTL 690 (EUR 199.8) per one ping for the farmers.

"According to our estimations, the money will be enough for the farmer, so that he will stop breeding pigs at least for the period of 2 years (). The compensation can be treated as an encouragement to turn to the breeding of the other kinds of the domestic animals," said Milius.
