Five major milk processing plants of Lithuania – Pieno Zvaigzdes, Rokiskio Suris, Zemaitijos Pienas, Vilkyskiu Pienine, and Marijampoles Pieno Konservai – claim to focus on quality production and their competitiveness, Lithuanian news portal 15min.lt reports.

Nevertheless, market researchers say that the major goal of Lithuania's largest dairy plants most probably is to develop itself and enter the global market, informs LETA/ELTA.

According to Lilija Tepeliene, the head of the Meat and Dairy Department at the Ministry of Agriculture, the dairy sector is growing in importance in the overall economy, since analysts predict that consumption of milk and dairy products in the world is on the rise.

Lithuania exports over 50% of its total dairy production. Last year, exports totaled 1.6 billion litas.

The bulk of it goes to Russia – 85% of all the exports to the third countries.

In the dairy industry, unlike energy, Lithuanians can work with Russians splendidly, the latter rewarding cooperation and quality products with long-term contracts, 15min.lt writes.

Dalius Trumpa, Board Chairman of Rokiskio Suris which controls approximately 20-25% of the market, admitted that Lithuanian dairy plants are very small compared to some of those in other EU countries; however, they have no fear of the competition on the European scale.
