Turks building Kaunas stadium go on strike

BC, Vilnius, 27.12.2019.Print version
Turkish workers building a stadium in Lithuania's second-biggest city of Kaunas have gone on strike, saying they have not received their wages for more than six months now, according to the 15min online information reported LETA/BNS.

Over 50 workers with posters gathered at the Darius and Girenas Stadium construction site on Friday morning.

The workers say Turkey's Kayi Construction, the construction contractor, has not paid their monthly wages of 2,000 euros for over six months and they have had to live on a monthly advance of just 500 euros.

They say the company owes each of them between 8,000 and 12,000 euros.

Five workers of Kayi Construction went on hunger strike in early December. The company paid them overdue wages and they returned to their homeland, according to 15min.

Alper Dedeoglu, deputy project manager at Kayi Construction, said it was a temporary problem, with workers' wages being overdue for only slightly more than a month.
