Lithuanian president vetoes bill lowering election threshold

BC, Vilnius, 19.12.2019.Print version
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on Thursday did not sign into law a bill lowering the parliamentary election threshold to 3% for political parties and 5 percent for party coalitions, reported LETA/BNS.

"The president has vetoed the Law on Seimas Elections and is sending it back for deliberation," Antanas Manstavicius, a presidential advisor, told.

Currently, political parties need to receive at least 5% of the national vote in the multi-member constituency to get seats in the parliament and coalitions have to clear a 7% threshold.

The president earlier backed a 4% threshold for parties and 6% for party coalitions.

The Seimas passed the new law on December 10, mostly by votes of the ruling coalition parties.
