Pharma companies spend EUR 3.4 mln on events, sponsorship in Estonia in 2017

Marketing authorization holders of medicines spent altogether 3.4 million euros in 2017 to finance promotional events and sponsor research and other activities by doctors, pharmacies, scientific and professional institutions, informs LETA/BNS.

The biggest spender for the aforementioned purposes was Abbvie Ltd with a spending of 240,000 euros, followed by Roche Eesti with 186,000 euros, Astrazeneca with 181,000 euros, Boehringer Ingelheim with 179,000 euros, Menerini International with 158,000 euros and Amgen with 147,000 euros. In total 12 companies spent more than 100,000 euros for promotional events and sponsorship, it appears from figures available from the Estonian Agency of Medicines.


The amount of money given by the businesses to doctors and pharmacists to finance their participation in professional events decreased by 8% year over year to 1.5 million euros and disbursements were made to 800 pharmacists and doctors.


The number of disbursements made was 1,218 and the average size of a disbursement was 1,200 euros.


The biggest recipients of support among doctors were Edward Laane with 16,400 euros, Hele Everaus with 15,600 euros and Margus Viigimaa with 13,600 euros.


The number of events to promote non-prescription medicines financed by pharmaceutical companies during the year decreased by 26 to 19 events and companies spent 18,000 euros to finance the events.


Events to promote prescription medicines in Estonia numbered 720 and they cost businesses 763,000 euros. Events to promote prescription medicines outside Estonia numbered 162 and businesses spent 194,000 euros on these events.


In addition, pharma companies spent 735,000 euros to finance 554 different events.
