Lithuania's key retailers doubt Poland's potential to cut prices

BC, Vilnius, 28.09.2017.Print version
Top executives of Lithuania's largest retail companies doubt whether a arrival of a new retailer from Poland could fulfill the expectations of Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis by offering necessities at a lower cost, Verslo Zinios daily said, cites LETA/BNS.

"The Poles may attempt some dumping at the very beginning. But in the end businesses want economic benefit and profit," said Dainius Dundulis, CEO of Norfa group. In his words, prices would be lowered as a result of revised tax system to bring the tax level down to the level of neighboring states.

Gerard Rog, CEO of Palink company that operates Iki retail chain, expressed doubt whether the possibility for a Polish retailer to come to Lithuania was realistic, primarily due to the small size of the Lithuanian market, with the country's population equaling the population of some European cities.

Skvernelis reportedly spoke about the possibility of attracting a Polish retail chain to Lithuania after discussing the issue with Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the leader of the Poland's ruling Law and Justice party, during a visit in Poland in early September.

The Lithuanian prime minister did not specify a chain. Largest chains in Poland are operated by Zabka and Lewiatan, with the popular Biedronka stores operated by Portuguese businessmen.
