Retailers: arrival of Lidl will make job shortages worse in Latvia

BC, Riga, 03.08.2017.Print version
The arrival of German discount supermarket chain Lidl in Latvia will make labor shortages worse in retail trade, as Latvian Food Retailers Association's Chief Executive Noris Kruzitis told LETA.

All retailers are reporting job shortages, said Kruzitis. Wages are not high in retail trade, therefore "it will be hard to revise anything".

This means that opening stores and training employees will be a great challenge to Lidl, and labor shortages in retail trade will only become worse.

Judging by recent developments, Lidl will begin operating in Latvia in the coming years. There are land plots being bought for the company, and construction of several supermarkets is being planned, said Kruzitis.

He believes that Lidl will open around a dozen stores at once in Latvia. The arrival of Lidl will affect discount stores the most, but ultimately it will have effect on all retail traders, Kruzitis added.

At the end of July, LNT television reported that Lidl would soon expand into Latvia. The company has already acquired a land plot in Riga where its wholesale base will be built, the television reported.

Lidl has not as yet announced entering the Latvian market.
