Estonia's Saku beverage group eyeing switch to renewable energy within 5 years

Carlsberg Grupp, owner of the Estonian beverage group Saku Olletehas, is planning to switch all its plants fully to renewable energy by 2022, reports LETA/BNS.

"Less than five years from now, by 2022, all our production operations must have switched fully to renewable energy. We must reduce our carbon emissions by half, use of water by a quarter, make alcohol-free beer available absolutely everywhere and reduce the number of work related accidents," Marika Tungel, production director at Saku, said in a press release. "The targets for 2030 have been set higher still," she added.

"As a matter of fact, we have been moving toward these goals already for some time and during last year, for instance, we improved our efficiency when it comes to heat and electricity expenses by almost 15%," Tungel said.

She added that renewable energy can be used more extensively through increased production of biogas from waste, for instance.

Carlsberg Grupp has set its sights on fully eliminating carbon emissions at all its breweries and cut the consumption of water by at least 50% at its plants by 2030.
