The Latvian Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) has found 23 new cases of African swine fever (ASF) among wild boars this week, the PVD said. The first two dead animals with ASF have been found in Ance country of Ventspils region, northwestern Latvia, reports LETA.

Thus, so far this year African swine fever has been found 66 wild boars in 30 counties in 23 regions. Last year in total of 1,146 wild boars with ASF were found.

As reported, the Food and Veterinary Service has established an outbreak of African swine fever in Rukas farm in Krimulda, central Latvia, which is the first case of ASF established in a domestic pig farm this year. Over 5,000 pigs on Rukas farm had to be culled after an outbreak of ASF discovered there on January 14.

The government on January 17 declared a state of emergency in the ASF-affected Krimulda region, as well as in the regions of Adazi and Salaspils.

The ASF outbreak started in Latvia in June 2014 not far from the border with Belarus.

African swine fever is an extremely dangerous and contagious virus infection affecting pigs. If an infected pig is found in a farm, all pigs in the particular farm have to be culled, which means big losses for farmers.
