Estonia must not forget dairy sector amid IT-enthusiasm

BC, Tallinn, 25.11.2016.Print version
While a lot of attention is being paid in Estonia to modern fields of technology, the dairy sector, which continues to have potential to make a contribution to economic growth, must not be allowed to fall into oblivion, Jaanus Murakas, deputy chairman of the supervisory board of the Estonian Chamber of Agriculture and Trade, says citing LETA/BNS.

"It's being believed now that startups and very modern IT technologies are the miracle cure for the economy, whereas we have neglected the traditional fields," Murakas said at Dairy Forum in Tallinn on Friday.

Murakas said dairy sector is a field which possesses more potental still to make a contribution to the country's economy, support regional development and rural employment.

Murakas said a fragmented, small-volume dairy sector has no future.

"Dairy business is a big-volume business and today we are indeed in a situation where we are searching for better solutions to arrive at a more competitive milk price, so that the next crisis would not batter us so much," he said. "Our resilience to crises is not very good. There's a lot to learn from it."

Murakas added that this definitely means further developments within the sector.
