Lithuanian apple producers can't compete with imported produce

Gardeners in Lithuania feel being mistreated by the state, as their crops cannot compete with imported apples on legal terms, Lietuvos Zinios daily said, cites LETA/BNS.

"The bulk of apples come to Lithuania from Poland, where the value-added tax (VAT) on food products is 5%, as compared to Lithuania's 21%. Furthermore, Polish farmers pay 8%, not 21% VAT on invested properties – fertilizers, pesticides, equipment, etc.," said Aloyzas Grygalis, CEO of Lithuania's largest Naradava horticultural farm.

In his words, gardeners in Lithuania must meet high quality requirements, which do not apply on imported products: "Polish and Spanish farmers may spray whatever they want, whereas Lithuania does not allow the slightest possibility, all sprays are prohibited, they only demand the quality of fruit be higher than that of imported ones."
