Minister: Estonian farmers don't get fair share of food retail price

BC, Riga, 08.07.2016.Print version
According to Minister of Rural Affairs Urmas Kruuse, the situation on the Estonian retail market is such that farmers do not get a big enough share of the final price of products, which is why the Ministry of Rural Affairs has made a proposal to the government to discuss and study the spread of unfair trade practices in Estonia, cites LETA\BNS.

"Today we are in a situation where farmers do not get enough of the final price," Kruuse told . He added that in many cases the problem might lie in farmers not having enough power to stand for their rights. "If farmers do not get a fair price, no support will help them," the minister said.

Kruuse stressed that the ministry does not wish to intervene on the free market, but wants to raise a question about whether contracts with farmers are always fair. "Are the agreements really concluded between two equal parties, or are they made from a position of power, especially in regard to contract penalties and transport conditions," Kruuse said.

To describe, map and study the situation, the ministry has been drawing up a memorandum to discuss the issues at a Cabinet meeting, the minister said.

When talking about practices of other countries, Kruuse said that several countries have improved monitoring.
