Imports of Russian timber hits Lithuanian sawmills

BC, Vilnius, 15.06.2016.Print version
Lack of raw timber in Lithuania has forced local processors to look for it abroad, and the increase in the imports of processed timber to Europe from Russia is affecting sawmill business in Lithuania, reported LETA/BNS, referring to Verslo Zinios.

The lack of timber on the local market is indicated by the second-semester auctions for state timber – 95% of all timber offered by state-run forestries was bought, which is an unusually high figure. International sources show that decline of the Russian national currency, the ruble, and halt of construction in the country has led to glut markets with timber.

"Our sawmills are in big trouble, as Russians import cut timber as a raw material," said Arvydas Urbis, the head of the Western Lithuanian Association of Timber Processors and Exporters.
