Organically farmed land grew by 8% in Estonia in 2015

The land area under organic management in Estonia expanded by 8.1% during 2015 to 170,800 hectares at the end of the year, making up 17% of the country's total agricultural land, a survey published by the Ministry of Rural Affairs indicates, cites LETA/BNS.

The number of agricultural holdings under organic management was 1,629, bigger by 87 than the year before. Parties processing organically grown food numbered 124 and included 52 organic producers who in addition farming engaged in the processing of food.

 

Natural foraging areas under inspection totaled 93,150 hectares, 36,650 hectares less than at the end of 2014.

 

As at the end of 2015, 11 companies had notified the Veterinary and Food Board about the provision of organic food at 14 children's institutions and 17 companies about the provision of organic food at 19 places elsewhere.
