Waste collection and management company Getlini Eko today repaid the remaining amount of a USD 7.96 million (EUR 7.35 million) loan it received from the World Bank (WB) 20 years ago in order to transform the undeveloped dumpsite into an environmentally secure landfill, LETA was told at the company.

The financing was used to prevent air and groundwater pollution at the landfill and its area, cover the old dumpsite and prepare new waste for burying, build a power generation complex and start collecting waste gas for power generation.

The company's total investments in the landfill have reached USD 25 million (EUR 23.12 million). The sum consists of the WB loan, funding provided by the Riga City Council, the Latvian government and other institutions, as well as the company's own investments.

"The World Bank's funding was the decisive factor ensuring the landfill's existence and development. That we have managed to repay the loan on time and without delays is an indication that the business plan, the growth strategy and annual targets have been well-founded and successful," said Getlini Eko CEO Imants Stirans.

In 2014, Getlini Eko raised turnover by 4% from a year ago to EUR 11.9 million, while its profit shrank to EUR 15.367 million euros from EUR 941.178 million in 2013, according to Firmas.lv.

Getlini Eko runs the "Getlini" landfill in Riga Region, Stopini County. The company's share capital is EUR 5,995,269. The Riga City Council owns 97.92% of the company's shares, the Stopini Region Council – 2.08%.
