To honor the contribution of the Riga resident and creator of the recipe for Riga Black Balsam, the pharmacist Abraham Kunze, JSC Latvijas balzams in cooperation with the Riga City Council announces an open tender for a design project for a memorial to A. Kunze in Alberta Square in the Riga Old Town.

At the same time, tender participants areinvited to submit ideas for a general concept of the development of Alberta Square.

Detailed terms and rules for the tender are available on the home pages of the Latvian Association of Architects and JSC Latvijas balzams. The tender submissions are due by October 9.

“Riga Black Balsam is one of the best known uniquely Latvian products in the world, the recipe for which was originally created in 1752. Today, it is one of the most popular local souvenirs and and export product that carries the name of Latvia out in the world. To perpetuate the contribution of the creative Riga resident, Abraham Kunze, we have announced a tender for a design project”, - reported BC Dana Hasana, head of communications for JSC Latvijas balzams and Amber Beverage Group.

The company representative says the memorial place will be located in Riga’s Old Town, in Alberta Square, not far from the place where Abraham Kunze lived and worked on Kalēju Street.

The recipe for Riga Black Balsam is closely linked to the historical and cultural traditions of Riga, therefore the Kunze memorial will be part of a general program of development and improvement of Alberta Square. “Taking into account that this historic square for some time has looked rather shabby, we are convinced that as a result of this tender, the city will gain another tidy and green area that will be created with respect for Riga’s rich history,” says the company representative.

The design projects for the memorial will be evaluated by a jury of architects, artists, professionals in the area of culture, as well as representatives of the Riga City Council and those announcing the tender. The three best design project authors will receive cash awards of EUR 2000, EUR 1000 and EUR 500.
