In the first quarter of this year, Riga hotels and other accommodation establishments registered 193,698 foreign visitors, or 19% more than in the first quarter of 2013, whereas the average number of nights spent by foreign travelers to Riga grew by 2%, reports LETA/Nozare.lv, referring to information from the Riga Tourism Development Bureau (RTDB).

RTDB public relations manager Anna Blaua informed the business portal Nozare.lv that the majority of tourists who stayed in Riga were from Russia – 31%, Estonia – 10%, Lithuania – 8%, Norway and Germany – 6%, Great Britain – 5%, Sweden and Finland – 4%.

The largest increase of tourists was registered from Poland – 56%, Germany – 42%, Great Britain – 27%, Estonia – 23%, Denmark and Russia – 20%, Lithuania – 16%, the United States – 11%, Sweden and Norway – 6%.

RTDB board member Vita Jermolovica explains that the results are influenced by many factors – advertising campaigns, prices and quality of hotels, and Riga's publicity in key foreign magazines. "It is important that the number of foreign visitors remains stable. I am also glad that Riga is visited by more people from other countries, for example, Poland, France, Denmark, the United States – in the first three months the number of tourists from these countries increased significantly. This proves that Riga is popular with not only travelers from the neighbor countries, but also from more distant countries," Jermonolovica says.
