The turnover of the Estonian meat industry sector increased in 2013 to 302.5 million euros, which means a 16.1% increase as compared to a year earlier, LETA/Postimees Online cites Estonian meat industry sector review, compiled by the Agriculture Ministry.

At the 302.5 million euros sales revenue, the sector earned a profit of 10.9 million euros, which was by 2.4 million euros more than a year earlier, Statistics Estonia short-term statistics show.

"The reason for the increase of sales revenues is increase of production volumes and higher than earlier sales at the internal and foreign market. Also, increased prices of meat and some meat products contributed to the increase of the sales revenue," said agriculture ministry agriculture and rural life policy deputy chancellor Illar Lemetti.

The meat industry sector exported 30.6 mln euros worth of production, by 2.6% more than a year earlier.

55 companies with 2,731 employees operated in Estonia at the end of 2013. That formed 19.8% of people employed in the food industry.
