On 1st August 2013, a contract was signed by SIA Merks – part of the AS Merko Ehitus group – and Municipality of Liepāja for construction of the multifunctional centre “Lielais Dzintars” located at Radio st. 8, Liepaja, Latvia.

Under the contract, SIA Merks will build a 10-storey (including two underground storeys) multifunctional centre with total gross area of 16,500 m². The building will accommodate acoustic concert hall for 1,000 spectators as well as number of other premises for various cultural events.

The contract value is EUR 28.3 million, plus value added tax. The works are scheduled for completion in July 2015.

Liepaja City Council Deputy Chairwoman Silva Golde signed contracts on construction of Liepaja's new concert hall "Lielais Dzintars" (The Great Amber) and project monitoring, expressing hope that the concert hall will attract not only music lovers, but also tourists and architecture enthusiasts, informs LETA.

More than ten years have passed since the birth of the idea. Throughout the years, the project has been doubted, loathed or lauded. The concert hall should play an important part not only in Liepaja's musical and cultural life, but also sever as an example of construction art and architecture, bringing a new look to the city's panorama, said Golde.

The project is characterized by multi-functionality, splendid, beautiful and modern architecture. The building's facade will reflect one of Liepaja's values – amber. Nevertheless, there is still hard work ahead, admitted Golde.
