Latvian government to continue supporting business tourism events
Under the Economics Ministry proposal for amendments to the EU-funded
program for boosting international competitiveness, the Latvian state will pay
10 percent of the organizational costs, provided that the international event
lasted three days and gathered at least 150 foreign participants.
Business tourism in Latvia has stabilized in recent years. Of all multi-day
travelers visiting Latvia in 2016, 19 percent or 344,000 people were business
travelers. Having analyzed competitiveness of the Baltic capitals as business
tourism destinations, the International Congress and Convention Association
concluded that in 2015 and 2016 Riga had hosted more conferences (33) than
Vilnius (29) and Tallinn (23).
Latvian Economics Minister Arvils
Aseradens (Unity) said that the government support to business tourism
would help bring to Latvia more business travelers, who spent here four times
more money that the average foreign tourist. Also, the hospitality industry
will benefit from business tourism during the off-season.
