Eesti Energia to build solar plant on dairy farm's roof

BC, Tallinn, 23.08.2017.Print version
The state owned Estonian energy group Eesti Energia is about to build a solar power station on top of the roof of a dairy farm of OU Estonia in central Estonia that will cover a big percentage of the company's power needs during the summer, informs LETA/BNS.

The solution that is one-of-a-kind will see Eesti Energia remain the owner and operator of the plant, while the electricity produced by the cells will be used by the agricultural company for its own needs at a fixed tariff, Eesti Energia said.

Karla Agan, head of energy sales at Eesti Energia, said that the project is financed by Eesti Energia. "The opportunity offered by us enables the company to be environment friendly without making additional investments and to focus on its core business. The Eesti Energia renewable energy company Enefit Taastuvenergia will be responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the system of solar panels," Agan said.

The price at which the agricultural company OU Estonia will buy electricity from the plant is lower than network price and is fixed for the entire contract period.

Under the project, a solar power station of 644 panels, with an installed capacity of 174 kilowatts, will be set up on the roof of the dairy farm. The system will cover approximately 15% of the annual electricity consumption of OU Estonia, including more than half of daytime consumption from April to August.

Construction of the plant is planned to take three months, including the design stage.

It is Eesti Energia's strategic goal to produce 40% of electric energy from renewable and alternative sources by 2020.
