UPS, one of the largest logistics companies worldwide, plans to double its freight haulage volumes within a few years and expand in Lithuania's second-largest city Kaunas by building a parcel distribution center and an office building, informs LETA/BNS.

Real-estate company Foneta said the construction in the Kaunas free economic zone (FEZ) for Skubios Siuntos, a company authorized by UPS, in October.

Vaidotas Lasas, CEO for Skubios Siuntos, said the construction of the warehouse had to do with the company's plans to double the parcel flow.

"The flights and the premises are part of expansion of UPS and us, as an authorized representative, as the Lithuanian economy is growing, also pulling up the numbers of parcels. To be able to serve businesses, we must keep up," Lasas told BNS. He refused to specify the size of investment in the new facilities.

In March, Skubios Siuntos announced launch of a new route between Kaunas and Cologne, as well as plans to double freight volume from 4 to 8 million tons.

Cologne houses the biggest UPS logistics center in Europe. The company entered Lithuania in 1991.

The Kaunas FEZ also includes a 6.5-million-euro parcel distribution center of DPD Lietuva.
